Woman looking into refrigerator

Reader question:

I have trouble maintaining satiety on a plant based diet. Can you help me?

Plant-based cuisine responds:

Not always, but I’ve heard that before. I have a few suggestions that can help you feel full longer.

1. Eat more food

Since there are fewer calories in whole foods than in diets that include animal proteins and fats or dairy, this means you need to eat more of the food to get the same amount of calories.

Keep this in mind when consuming meals because sometimes people add more green vegetables and forget to add other plant foods which can help them stay full longer. I’ll dive into those below…

2. Add fat

If you’re not limiting all fats, adding good fats to your meals, such as avocados and nuts or seeds (1–2 ounces) can help. Nuts are highly recommended byDr Joel Fuhrman. Dr. Fuhrman inspired me to switch to a whole plant-based diet. Not only are they recommended for satiety, but they are also important for overall health and especially brain health.

According to Dr. Fuhrman, all-vegetable sources of fat, including nuts and seeds, are strongly linked to longevity because they reduce the risk of heart disease, prevent cancer and “play an important role in brain health. “.

Nuts and/or seeds can be used to make dressings or sprinkled on your salad and are a great addition to breakfast cereals like oatmeal and buckwheat.

3. Get enough protein

Eating enough plant-based protein at each meal can also help. What is meant by enough grams of protein per day? Adults need no more than 0.8 or 0.9 grams of protein per kilogram of healthy body weight per day. it’s aarticlewith an easy-to-use calculator to determine your grams of protein for the day.

This is especially true if you65 or olderas more may be needed as we age. For example, stick to plant-based protein foods: tofu, tempeh, quinoa, seitan, and all legumes are good choices.

Add beans to your salad, soup or stew, try an eggless salad with tofu or tempeh. Quinoa is a great substitute for brown rice in dishes and can even be made into flatbreads. Seitan is made from wheat gluten, so it is not suitable if you are gluten sensitive.

Other soy products such as soy milk or soy yogurt are good choices. I love adding homemade soy yogurt to my oats and berries, and nuts for breakfast. Or add it to your smoothie.

4. Eat whole grains

Adding whole grains like longro, brown rice, barley or toast to your meals can help. Whole grains take longer to digest than refined grains. Dr. Greger offers a delicious whole grain breakfast made with barley, rye berries, oats (like brown rice) and black lentils. Black lentils contain protein and other whole grains that will keep you full longer. From herehis recipefor BROL, short forREMOVEarley,CHEAPbrother,OandTO OFFERguide

5. Eat a big salad every day

I know it is sometimes difficult to eat large salads raw, but they are usually filling. Some people chop raw ingredients by hand or with a food processor to chew them. Add beans or whole grains to salads for extra nutrition and a feeling of satiety.

And don’t forget that squash and potatoes can be filling and delicious in salads. White potatoes are best eaten cold because they can affect blood sugar levels in some people.

Hope this helps with a few things. I guess a food diary can help determine what works best.

I want to know how you are so tell me how it’s going…

6. Drink plenty of water

Yes, we hear that drinking 8 glasses of water a day is good, but how many of us actually achieve that goal. If you forget to drink water, find a way to keep track. I like to keep 8 raw peas in my bag and will move them from the left pocket to the right pocket when I have a drink. This way I know for sure that drinking more water will help reduce hunger.

Remember that your body may get used to eating fewer processed foods or that fast food tends to stay in your system longer. Also, your body is only used to eating in a certain way. Take your time and I’m sure you’ll start to feel more satisfied with this new way of eating.
